American Airpower Museum Farmingdale, NY
First a disclaimer. This is not simply a museum destination. Yes, the American Airpower Museum is a museum and it does have a museum with displays and there is an excellent collection of warbirds here that includes a beautiful A-10 Warthog, an F-111 Aardvark, a B-25 Mitchell, an A-6 Intruder (and plenty more), but what makes this worth your while is the museum’s C-47 D-Day Flight Experience. Unlike any other ride in a C-47, on this flight you’ll be part of a D-Day parachute “drop” reenacted by volunteers who will fly with you fully dressed as WWII paratroopers. You will start in the briefing room where you and your paratroopers will plan your mission. From there, you’ll board the plane and your C-47 will lumber down the runway and take off and bounce through the air with the roar of engines — and a sense of urgency. Your reenactors will prepare for their jump and talk to you as they line up (but they do not go out the door).
This is a fabulous way to get to know the iconic C-47 (a DC-3 in civilian life) plus a powerful way to relive history and to understand the role of our paratroopers. But this is also serious stuff so you will be briefed on safety protocols and escorted in and around the aircraft.
